U.S. DECISION
MERCHANTMEN OF BELLIGERENT NATIONS. MAY CARRY GUNS FOR. THEIR OWN DEFENCE. (Received September 23, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 22nd September. Reuters New York agent says the United States has decided that merchantmen of belligerent nations entering United States ports may carry guns not exceeding 6in for their own defence, without acquiring a charter as ships of war. Guns must not be mounted forward, and only a little ammunition can be carried. A vessel must be manned with the same number of men. as before the war.
