WAR DISTRESS FUND
GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the Mayor's War Fund General Committee was held yesterday afternoon, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presiding. The Chairman announced that the Distress Fund totalled £1904 19s 6d, and so far absolutely none of this had been expended. There had been very little distress to attend to, but matters had been a little more strenuous during the past few days. However, the position was still practically normal, due, to a, great extent, to the efforts of the Labour Department's officers. The latter were doing all m their power to meet the conditions which were arising. Mr. Luke asked for the appointment of a sub-committee to help in the administration of the fund. Meetings or consultations could be held daily. The suggestion found general favour, and the following committee was elected :-— Councillors R. Fletcher and W. - H. P. I3arber, the Rev. W. A. Evans (chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board), Messrs. E. C. Jack (Farmers' Union), W. A. Grenfell (Employers' Association), J. M. A. Reardcn (Trades and Labour Council), and H. Moston (Labour Department). In reply to Councillor T. C. A. Hislop, the Mayor stated that the committee would continue to administer the fund, and there was no intention to hand it over to a. social guild or any other such body. However, the committee would be pleased to take advantage of the machinery of the Wellington Hospital Board. In attending to distress, the cpmmittea would welcome the co-opera-tion of others.
