BATTLE CONTINUES

COUNTER-ATTACK- REPULSED ENEMY'S ACTIVITY I BELGIUM SATISFACTION IN RUSSIA-

'Although there must have been heavy fighting between the Germans and the Allies during tbte last day or two— and perhaps a big battle is still ill progress— no news of importance has been allowed to pass the censor. A special correspondent of an English journal asserts that a new army of secret composition has arrived at the front and is engaged against the German right wing, which is retreating. It may be that the army is composed of British, French, and Indian troops ; that must remain a matter for speculation until the military authorities choose to throw light on the subject. An official message from Paris (so telegraphs the Bordeaux correspondent of the London Daily Chronicle) states that the battle continues along tho Oise and Meuse. The Germans, armed with heavy artillery, occupy a prepared position ; consequently the progress of the Allies is slow, "but the vigour and enthusiasm of the troops is unabated." Outside Liege the Germans are reported to be preparing strong reinforcements to prevent attacks from the north and north-west, and there Are veiled hints at Antwerp of interesting developments. "Military operations in the north*west of Belgium are imminent/* In a state of complete rout, the Austrians are evacuating Galiciai and German troops who have been reinforcing them are now retreating, probably to meet the Russians in another place. Reports from the Russian capital attribute the enormous Austrian losses largely to the fact that xaw Landsturm (reservists) troops are often placed in the firing line. In Petrograd there is great satisfaction at the declaration of the Triple Entente that they will make peace togetherPublic opinion in Italy is strongly in favour of the Italian troops fighting alongside those of the Allies.
