PRIOR TO THE WAR BRITAIN AND AUSTRIA.
WHAT A WHITE PAPER SHOWS. LONDON, 17th September. A White Paper states that Sir Maurice de Bunsen, British Minister at Vienna prior to the war, in a despatch in reference to the rupture with Austria, shows that on Ist August conversations between St.. Petersburg and Vienna were proceeding in the friendliest way. Austria even assented to mediation on the points in her ultimatum which were incompatible with Servian independence. It was at this point that Germany intervened in an ultimatum to St. Petersburg and Paris, cutting short the prospects for peace. A few days' delay would ih all probability have saved Europe from the greatest oalamity in history. GERMAN SUGAR CROP QUESTION ASKED IN HOUSE OF ' COMMONS. LONDON7I7th September. In the House of Commons, Mr. A. Macallum Scott asked whether Germany was attempting to _ realise on her sugar crop by exportation of the surplus, valued at £40,000,000, through Holland.
