VIOLENT ASSAULT
ON UNSUSPECTING CHINESE SENSATION IN COURTENAYPLACE. A violent assault, apparently quite unprovoked, was committed on an elderly Ohinese named Wong Joe, in Courtenayplace shortly after 11 o'clock this morning, and caused a considerable sensation. Wong Joe, it appears, had just come out of a countryman's fruit shop a few doors past Allen-street, when a man went up to him, and, without any warning whatever, knocked him down on the footpath. H© then sat on his victim's chest and grasped him with both hands by the throat. Wong Joe, who was screaming loudly, struggled to release himself, and managed to work himself over on to hi 6 face. His attacker then rose to his feet, and, it is alleged, deliberately aimed three blows with one of his boots at the unfortunate Chinaman's head. Two of them miesed, but the third caught him full on the side of the jaw. The cries of the Chinese attracted a. fairly largo crowd, and the attacker leisurely crossed over Courtenay-place, and round into Tory-street. Determined not to let him pscape, three or four spectators followed him up. Meanwhile Constable Anderson, of Manners-street Police Station, who was on the beat, learned of the assault, and borrowing a bicycle overhauled the man, still proceeding unconcernedly on his way, and arrested him. The injured man was assisted to his feet and taken to the Police Station near by. He was evidently Buffering severely, and appeared to be somewhat dazed. Dr. Martin was called in, and found that he had sustained a bruise on the left temporal aud a partial fracture of the lower jaw. The unfortunate man's mouth was badly swollen, and his ineide lower lip was severely cut. After his head had been bandaged up he was conveyed, accompanied by two fellow-Chi-nese, to the Hospital. The arrested man gave his name at the Police Station as James Little. Ho is of medium build, apparently between 30 and 35 years of age, and told the police that he only arrived in Wellington, from Whangamomona a week ago. He did not appear to be concerned at his act, and when asked the reason for the assault, stated that the Chinese had "done him out of his job." He will appear before- the Magistrate tomorrow morning, but will pi*obably be remanded until the assaulted Chmeso is in a fit condition to appear.
