LAWN TENNIS

THE WELLINGTON CLUB. The annual meeting of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Club was held last evening in Gamble and Creed's rooms, Lambtonquay, Dr. Young (president) being' in the cliair. About 36 members were pre&ent. In his opening remarks the chairman congratulated members on the club's present satisfactory position. He was pleased to note that the membership roll and the finances were so good. The report showed that 38 new members had been elected during the past season, and 15 successful tournaments had been held. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £36 14s lOd. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows : —President, Dr. W. Young; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. J. Fernie, W. Fraser, A. Hoby, C. T. Rout, and G. Shand ; lion, secretary, Mr. F. W. Crombie ; lion, treasurer, Mr. R. J. Grant; hon. auditor. Air. A. R. Coad, F.1.A., N.Z. ; committee/ Misses K. Francis and E. C. Williams, Messrs. N. Henley, W. D. Irons, and 0. A. Jeffery. a motion of Mr. F. W. Crombie, that the club affiliate with the New Zealand Sports Protection League, was carried, as were also several motions by Mr. Crombio amending the ruies relating to membership, subscriptions, etc. Mr. Crombie explained the terms on which the genera] rate on the club's' property in Palmer-street would bo remitted by the City Council, which was the result of representations made to the council by the New Zealand Sports Protection League, and it was decided to take advantage of this remission. Reference was made to the fact that three members (Messrs. A. Boddbgton, J. JJ. Harper, and T. Lawless), who had joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and it was resolved that their names should be retained on the membership roll pending their return to the Dominion. The opening of the season was fixed for/Saturday, 26th September. Votes of thanks to retiring officers, and the chairman, concluded a most successful meeting. BUILDING TRADES LABOURERS' UNION ■ «*» At a meeting of the Building Trades Labourers' Union last evening the following resolutions were adopted :— (1) " That this union extends heartfelt sympathy to the < relatives of the victims in the recent Huirtly coal-mine disaster, and strongly urges the Government to set up a "public board of enquiry into the cause of the disaster, arid, that representation of the organised miners in New Zealand be given upon such board." (2) "That this union views with alarm the further inflation of food prices in New Zealand, ' which is detriments* to the workers, and hereby calls'" upon the Government to hasten the result of the Commission of Enquiry now sitting with regard to | .tho price of foodstuffs in N-ew Zealand.
