A British officer states that the number and persistence of German spies are amazing. A screen of hundreds of them precedes the advance armies. Most are captured, but some get through, and return with valuable reports. The British find them everywhere, even marching among the British troops. Though they invariably wear British uniforms, made for the purpose, they seldom speak English or French. ffhey are shot without exception, but the loss does not affect the system.
