ASSAULT AT KILBIRNIE

CHINESE SENT TO GAOL\ A jovial-looking Chinese named You was placed in the dock at the Magistrate s Court to-day and charged with committing an aggravated assault on a woman named Annie Geary. The offence, described by Inspector lleiulrey as brutal and cowardly, took place ab Kilbirnie on Saturday evening. Geary lived with another Chinese named Georgra How, a market gardener, who employed You. Sho went with You and other Celestials into town on Saturday* ovening, and by some means the- party was separated. The woman went home, and at about 11 o'clock she was seated ilv side How's house when the man You entered, and without any provocation punched her face, knocked her down on the floor, and savagely kicked her. Two men were tjnable to hold accused, and the police were informed of the oc« currence. Accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four months' hard labour. \on was also charged with assaulting Gee Poy at Christchurch on Bth February last, when, it is alleged, he used a knife and inflicted bodily harm. He was re> manded to appear at Christchurch next Monday.
