NOTES AND COMMENTS

(»I "SIR LAKCHLOT.") The programme of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held on the 28th and 29th instant, is more attractive than that issued twelve mouth* . ago. The steeplechase events at the Winter Meeting were so successful that they have again been ihcluded in the programme. The Dominion Handicap, of 300 soys, one mile and a quarter, is the principal event on the opening day, and the President's Handicap, of 200 soys, one mile, on the second day. Owners are reminded that nominations for all events and entries for the Maiden Plate close to-night at 8.30 p.m. with 'Mr, 0. J. D Ath (secretary). Although Merrie Guy's name appears among the acceptors for the Danhevirke meeting, J. Scott, who trains the Men-ie England gelding, informed me at Marton that he was unlikely to compete. Glen Nevis, Awahou, Lady Louisa, and Makiri, winners at Mprton, are engaged at Danhevirke next Wednesday. It is stated that the reason why Awahou (ridden by Price) was paying such a good price at Marton was because he wanted a race and his connections were afraid of Sir Donald (A. Oliver), who was given t clear run on the rails but could not get up. The connections of Fashion Plate put in heavily, but tho solid pace set t>y Moutana, who in a seven furlongs hack race at Dannevirke. broke her up. The way matters turned out the Wellington-owned mare was un« lucky not to get third slace. There were several Auckland visitors at Marton, who returned after the seventh <race and were home in the morning. The Main Trunk trains have proved a, great convenience, and sottto WfelUttgton visitors, who left the previous night attended the meeting and were home the following morning. 0_ Bmsrsoa, who returned from Sydney earlier in the week, rode the two nletti* bers of the Hon. J. D. Ormond's team >that ran prominently at Marton. B. Deeley had a mount in feftch of thfe flab races at the _ meeting named, but failed to add to his winning total. At a meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club's committee on Tuesday, A. Wright and C. Price were granted a trainer's and a jockey's license respectively. A prominent trainer engaged at M&rton called my attention to a person who was neither the owner or the train- - i er apparently assisting to fix the gear of a competitor after it had left the saddling paddock. This matte^ evidently escaped the notice of Stipendiaries M'Mahon and Gordon, who wer© m action at tile meeting. Some of the competitors in the steeplechase and flat, events at Marton, not engaged at Dannevirke; way be expected to compete at Avondflle on the 16th and ,19th' iastdnt: The 'stakes Wre w<elL worth "going up for. - OvvneJffc should not«e that nominations close to-night with Mr. H. H. Hayr (secretary), Auckland. > A Oliver and W. Bell were .successful | in events at Marton, in which the Highden colours were competihg. Of the two runners in the Electric Hack, Garance (All Red's half-brothel 1 ) made the best showing, and finished in fourth place. The Marton Handicap winner, Mahiarea, whose owner adopts the norn do course of "C. Sharwood, is a five-year old by Maniapoto— Grassmere, by Haere, a 'con of Malua, imported from victoria, from Barbarnia. by Barbarian, by Golden Grape— Sally Brass, who goes back to Vesta. Prior to getting Maniaroa, Grassmere had progeny by St. Paul, St. Clenv .ents, and Patronus. She has a .three-year-old by Glenullin named t Lake Bel. Last season Maniaroa- was trained by R. j Milne, whose name does not appear in the list of licensed persons this season According to the Marton correct card tho gelding is now trained by J. Cleave. G. Price informed me at Wanganui that A. Oliver put u^» 2lb overweight on Pariform in the Railway at M-arton, bringing his .weight up to 8.6. t He also drew an outeide number and in consequence of this he did not expect him to win. However, he was disappointed with the vvay be shaped, as he got badly away and never showed any daSh at any part of it. Five-year-olds sired by Soult and his son Mattia-poto were successful at Marton. The Awapuni trainer* who have com. imndeered the Wanganui tracks report that the working ground there is in excellent order, but that if the present spell of dry weather continues,' the track will have, to be watered. The caretaker of tho Wanganui course. Mr. Ryves Webb, has been connected with the Wanganui Jockey Chib for fifteen years. Secretaries End«ll Wanklyu (Foxton). H. A. Goodall (Rangitikei), and Edmund Goodbehere (Feilding) were present at the Marton Meeting. Master Strowan, who got th© stake in the Tukelnui Hack Welter at Marton when Awahau wa« ruled out, is by Strowan from a marc by The Artist, and is trained at Foxton by W. Trask for Mr. If. S. Easton. Master Strowan ran second in the Maiden and Scurry at Otaki in June, and this was his first win. Trask trained The Rover when he wad ruled out at Wanganui. Master Lupin, Master Stead, Master Malachi, and Master Achilles are all engaged at Dannevirke, but nob Master Strowan. Timekeepers should have absolutely reliable chronometers. Why not make sure and get one from O'Connor and Tydeman, jewellers, Palmewtoa North. -Advt.
