MINING NEWS

WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION GOOD VALUES AT DEPTH.

(II TELEGIUPH,— SPKtAt TO tUtt »0«I.) WAIHI, 28th August. Recent developments in the low level of the Grand Junction mine have shown the lodes to be of good width and better average value than at the corresponding points on the various levels above, features which augur well for the future of the property. Tho south-east crosscut at No. 7 level is now out 410 feet from the shaft and is traversing a good class of country. Another 260 teet of, driving should bring the crosscut in touch with the Royal reef. The north crosscut has been advanced 380 feet from the shaft, and is also in a good belt of country, but the reefs so far intersected, though carrying values and proving more solid and free from disturbance than at No. 6 level, have not disclosed milling ore. On the Empire f ootwall branch at the bottom workings the drive west is now 150 feet out from the main south-east crosscut, and is in ore of high grade, with cdtf the south wall of the lode exposed, tm width of the drive being rather wet 6 feet. Going east, the Empire iootwall leader junctions with what appeshi to be the main Empire reef about 30 feet east of the main crosscut, and has also carried high-grade quartz. On what is considered to be the main Empire, which was cut about 143 feet south of the shaft, the drive east o{ the lode is now out 120 feet from the main crosscut, and discloses good values for the full distance driven. At the point where the two veins junction (30 feet from the main crosscut), the combined ore bodice have been broken out for, a width 6f 28 feet, the average" values. right across being good. After following the large mass of quartz east for over 25 feet, tha drive waß continued on the footwall section of the reef, and is still in good grade ore. The drive west on the m»in Empire lodes is out 130 feet from the main crosscut, and has been in nia» sulphide ore for the full distance, with only one wall of the reef exposed. On th& lode cut at 118 feet south of the shaft, the drive west is out 35 feck, while on its eastern extension the ore body has been followed 50 feet. In the west drive the values have been good throughout, and nice ore was opehed up for the first 2b feet going east, after which the 'value* were lower, though still of milling grade. At No. 6 level the drive east on the Empire reef is 300 ieet beyond the faulted country, the total distances driven from the main crosscut being 1120 feet, and the quartz is going to ths mill for treatment. At 1180 feet a crosscut was pub through the ore boay, proving it to oe 40 feet wide, of which a width of 5 feet is worth £1 14s p«t ton, the remainder showing lower values. The reef ia solid and well defined, and the existence of ore of payable quality so far east causes the development to be regarded as one of considerable moment, and of marked possibilities, as far at this section of the mine is concerned. The winzes on the various reefs BOttth of the sheft, are disclosing satisfactory values going down from No. 6 level, and the stopping blocks and other ore-pro* dticing points show that the lodes are fully maintaining their widths and values, and that no difficulty should be experienced in keeping the monthly, tonnage of ore to Uie mill at 10,000 ton*
