COMPROMISE IN CARRIERS' DISPUTE
(IV mKOR«>n~*RBSS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, 27th August. A conference has been held between delegates comprising the executive of the Dutiedin Drivers' Union and the Carriers and Coal Merchants' Union of Employers. The object of the confer' ence was to consider some proposal to meet the serious disorganisation of trade caused by the war. The president of the master carriers suggested the suspension of Clause 11 of the drivers' awafdj viz., "In case of drivers other than casual hands a week's notice of dismissal or resignation shall be given by the employer or worker." The delegates of the union agreed to this sug> gention, recognising that compromise was necessary, so that all drivers might get a fair share of work. It is understood that as the award is a Dominion one, any proposal agreed to here would require the assent ol the other centres, and would have to be confirmed by the Arbitration Court.
