BRITAIN'S NEW RIFLE

f-INCH ARMOUR PIERCED AT 500 YARDS.

An article in The Post last week made brief reference to the new British rifle, which has a muzzle velocity of 3000 ft per second, estimated to be 100 ft better than the nearest rifle gives. This weapon has a barrel 2£ inches longer than the superseded pattern had. The idea underlying the adoption of the short rifle was to have an arm which/ would be easily handled by both mounted and dismounted troops. To suit the cavalry 5 inohes were taken off, .and thus the infantry soldier lost in the length of his reach with the bayonet. Attempts were made to give compensation with a longer bayonet, but the experiment was not satisfactory. It was found that a longer barrel was necessary for accuracy and ease of firing. In a trial at Aldershot the bullets pi the new model, at 500 yds, pierced j2-mch square steel targets, § inch in thickness.
