RECENT CITY CRIMES

SUSPECTED TOUNG MAN IN CUSTODY. During June and July several thefts from various dwellings wero reported in the press, and at the time Superintendent Ellison stated that he regarded all tho alleged orimes as the work of one man. "We will catch him sooner or later," ho said to a Post reporter. Recently, at Wanganui, a young man named William Gillman, who has been in tho Dominion about one year, was taken into custody, and as a result of enquiries made by the local detective office, the following charges were brought against him at tho Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. :— On 29th Mny, of breaking and ' entering the dwelling of Augustin» Myers and stealiug therefrom jewellery, •9t0., to tho value of £23; on 9th June, breaking and entering tho residence of Peroy Walter Wood, at Wellington, and stealing therefrom articles to the value of £7 ss ; on 9th June, breaking and entering the .dwelling of Frederick William FiBK, and stealing jewellery to the valuo of £45 ; on the same dato. breaking and entering the house of Wilfred Talbot, Kelburn, and stealing jewellery to tho value of £38; on 23rd June, breaking and entering the dwelling of Lillian Donovan at Kilbirnie, and stealing jewellery, etc., valued at £8 sa ; on 28th Juno, breaking and entering the dwelling of Rev. William Raane, ahd stealing jewellery, etc., valued *t £50 ; on l&h July, at Island Bay, brenkand entering: the dwelling of Alexander Laurohson, and stealing jewellery to the value of £136 16s ; on 14th June, breaking and entering the residence of the Rev. Mr. Brainsby, in John-street, and stealing Bomo property valued at £11., . On the application of Chief-Detective Broborg, accused was remanded until next Wednesday. Muoh of the missing property haa been recovered.
