It is officially reported that engagements have taken place along the frontier 'at Longwy, Longuyon, Marville, and Virton. German cavalry patrols were encountered north of Montmedy. THE GOEBEN WAS SEEN APPROACHING THE DARDANELLES. (Received August 12, 3.5 p.m.) ATHENS, 11th August. The captain of a Greek steamer reports that he met the German warship Goeben approaching the Dardanelles on 10th August. PAYMENT OF M.P.'S A SUGGESTION. (Received August 12, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, 11th August. A correspondent suggests that the members of the , House of Commons should take half-pay, following the precedent of the Japanese ' Government during the Russo-Japanese war. KING AND QUEEN OVATIONS AT ALDERSHOT. (Received August 12, 3.10 p.m.) LONDON, 11th August. Their Majesties the King and Queen motored to Aldershot and 'made a complete tour of the garrison. They received an ovation everywhere. THE OPEN SEA ROUTES Judging from a cablegram received by Messrs. Bannatyne ana Co., agents for Curtis and Harvey's Powder Mills, the English Channel and North Atlantic routes would seem to be clear of the enemy. A cablegram was received yesterday to the effect that a shipment of explosives had been made to Wellington in a regular steamer, and that further shipments are to follow next month, as in the ordinary course. Evidently exporters of explosives have confidence in Britain's power to keep the sea ; ways open, as it was only on Saturday that Nobels cabled their, agents of the shipment of such cargoes to New Zealand.
