MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. William Forbes, an ex-police con* constable, who was before the Court a few daye ago on a charge of obtaining money from the Wellington Racing Club af, Trentham" by ineahs of' a va.lu.dles* cheque, and also with fraudulently altering same, was again charged to-day with, obtaining the sum of £19 19s 6d from the Wellington Racing Club by means of a false pretchce. Detective Lewi* stated that on the Ist August, just after the previous charge against accused had been heard, witness charged him with obtaining money from the Racing Club bjr means, of false pretences, and 'he replied : "It's all tho one thing. Why co x uldn't they have gone on with it this morning?" The detective replied that it was necessary to get a witness from the Bank of New Zealand to prove that there was no account in* the accused's »amc. Forbes then said : "There was no need to do that. The letter I wrote to Whyte showed that the cheque would not be met." A. E. Whyte, secretary of the Racing Club, stated that he received two letters from Forbes in reference to the cheques which he had cashed at tlie races. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who appeared for accused, stated that ho would plead not guilty, and would reserve his defence. Accused was committed for trial to the Supremo Court on 10th Au- ' gust, bail of £100 being allowed, as on the previous occasion. Frederick Bannister, charged with exposing for sale ih Willis-street, obscene photographs, was remanded till the 12th instant. An old offender named Norah Nugent, charged with drunkenness, was fined 40s, in default seven days' imprisonment, and Walter Porter was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Five first offenders were let off with minimum penalties. Joseph Brouton and George Howard, charged with assaulting each othor, wcro remanded till the 14th instant. Edward Bovan, charged with driving an express in Cuba-street at night without a light, was fined 6s, and. 7s costs. George James Howard, on a sinu'lai charge for n motor-car, was fined ss, and 7s costs. Michael Regan, charged with passing a tram in Willis-street while it was stopped, was fined ss,' and £1 Is costs. Bernard Roberts, for leaving a cart unattended in Pipitea-streot without chaining the wheel, was fined Is. William Roberts, charged with leaving a lorry unattended in Dixon-street, was fined ss, and 7s costs. Daniel Clark, bookseller, .
