BELGIANS REPULSE GERMANS LATTER LOSE HEAVILY ON THE FRANCO-GERMAN FRONTIER A SHARP ENGAGEMENT KING GEORGE'S MESSAGE TO THE NAVY THE REVIVING OF OLD GLORIES
'A' feature of to-day's war news is the report of the gallant fight the little kingdom of Belgium is putting up against the German battalions. News from the Belgian capital states that a fierce struggle took place in the environs of Liege early on Wednesday morning last, and that all the German attacks were Tepulsed, the Belgian troops displaying great gallantry, At other points 'the invaders were also held off, and, according to the Belgian "War Office, their losses were enormous. Practically no details of late doings in Austria, Servia, Russia, France, and Germany are to hand, owing to the strict censorship over news being exercised in those countries. A skirmish between French and German forces has taken place near Nancy. ' From England comes news o^ the appointment of FieldMarshal Earl Kitchener to the position of Secretary of State for "War, vice Mr. Asquith (Prime Minister), , who a few weeks ago succeeded Colonel Seely in that position. General Sir lan Hamilton has been made Commander-in-Chief of the Home Forces. There have been minor changes made in the British Ministry consequent on t the resignations of ' Lord Morley and Mr. C. P. Trevelyan. His Majesty the King has sent a message through Admiral Sir John Jellicoe to the officers and men of the Home Fleet, in which the sovereign expresses confidence that the old glories of the Navy will be renewed. Belated news throws further light on the negotiations which preceded the German declaration of war against Uussia. Turkey is closing the Dardanelles as a means to the safeguarding of her neutrality.
