SHORTENING HANDS
THE AUSTRALIAN MINES. (Received August 4, 10.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The depreciation in tho price of metals has led to_ the closing of the Whim Creek copper mine. The manager discharged 200 hands. At the Mount Morgan mine a similar number has been dispensed with. A large shortening of hands is anticipated at Broken Hill, unless the position improves. _ 'Ihe Unemployed Labourers' Associa- | tion of Sydney has asked to' be provided J employment on defence work unless peace is reached speedily.
