TO-DA V S PROCEEDINGS LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL The Legislative Council met at 2.30' p.m. ) The question of the personnel of committees was raised by the Hon. Mr. Jones, who complained that he had been taken off every committee which had any political significance. It was only right that tho other side of tho House should be represented on important committees. The Leader of the Council said in composing the committees he had not taken any question of politics into consideration and had simply endeavoured to place on suitable committees the hon. gentlemen who, in hie opinion, were best qualified for the work of the various committees. t As regarded the Lands Committee to which Ml 1 . Jones had specially refer* red, he had considered that some of the new members of the Council had special experience and knowledge of the matters dealt with by that committee. He had always made every effort to meet tho desires of honourable members as far as it could be done iri the best interests of the Council. ' (Proceeding.) HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES The House met at 2.30 p.m. Further petitions were presented in favour of the retention of the present system of free secular and comjMlsory education. Mr. Davey presented a petition against the hotelkeepers' award applying to club employees. Notice was given by Mr. Young to ask the Government if it will legislate in the direction of the compulsory grading of fruit for export. Mr. Payne gave notice to introduce the Unregistered Nurses' Registration Bill and the Compulsory Voting Bill. Mr. Wilkinson drew attention to the fact that the Bible-in-State-Schools League was getting people to bign a card .stating that if the object of the league I was not carried at the next election he or she would place the Bible-in-schools question before any political party issue. The Attorney-General asked Mr. Wilkinson to give notice of tho question. (Proceeding.) LEAGUE OF MODERATES o ■ . In view of the recent keen controversy on the licensing question considerable interest attaches to the meeting to be held to-night in the Conceit Chamber of the Town Hall, when it is proposed to form a League of Moderates with a view to conserving the interests of the general public in regard to this question. Mr. A. A. S. Menteath will preside, and there is likely to be a large attendance. Doors will open at 7.30. Ladies are specially invited. SERIOUS CHARGES In ' the Magistrate's Court to-day Charles Chadwick, charged with at- X tempting to commit an assault on a boy, was sent to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was fixed at £100 or two sureties of £50. Charles Printzen, 65 years of age, was also committed for trial on a charge of assaulting a girl 13 years old. Mr. J. F. Arnold, ex-M.P. for Duiv ediu, who is now an officer of the Labour Department, is at present in Wellington, en route to New Plymouth, where he will take up tho position of officer in charge. The retirement of Mr. W. C. Gasquoine, business manager of the State Coal Minos Department, from the Public Service, consequent on a rearrangement of the staff, will take effect from Saturday next, Ist, August.,
