Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon. R. H. Rhodes, and the Hon J. Barr, M.L.C., returned to Wellington from the South this morning. Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, is at present in Wellington, Mr. R. M'Na.b was a passenger to Wellington from Lyttelton by, the Maori this morning. Mr. B. B. Wood, of Christchurch, was a passenger from the South by the Maori this morning. Mr. Gordon Harper has been selected as the Government candidate for the Riccarton seat. Mr. Wanklyn, of Christchurch, secretary of the New. Zealand Racing Conference, arrived in Wellington this morning from, the South. ' Tho Municipal Association's Conference passed this morning a resolution of condolence with the telatives of th© late Sir Arthur Guinness, whose death had occurred since the last conierence. The Anglican Synod passed a resolution yesterday expressing its -sense of the great loss it had sustained in the death of one of its oldest members, Captain Hewitt, who died a few days after he withdrew from the synod last year. At last night's meeting of the Lower Hutfc Borough Council Fireman A. H. Smith, of the local volunteer fire brigade, was presented with a five years' service medal by the Mayor (Mr, H. Baldwin) on behalf of the council. (A two years' service bar was also presented to Fireman S. Strand, who is already the holder of a long service medal. The death occurred at New Plymouth on Saturday last of Mr. E. G. Allsworth, who was well known in the Taranaki and Wanganui districts. Mr. Allsworth, who was 66 years of age, was successively editor of the Egmont Settler at Stratford, the Daily News at New Plymouth, the Manukau Times, and the Taihape Times. He was for many yeara a member, and part of Che tin\p chairman, of the Taranaki Education Board, and one of the School Commissioners. Deceased was a son of the late Rev. J. G. Allsworth; Moderatoi of the Presbyterian General Assembly. A portrait of the late Mr. George Laurenson, M.P. for Lyttelton, was unveiled by Sir Joseph Ward at Lyttelton last evening, in the presence of about three hundred people, including the Hon. R. H. Rhodes, Postmaster-General, and many members of both Houses of Parliament (states a Press Association telegram)., Sir Joseph Ward said that the late Mr. Laurenson was for many years member of Parliament for Lyttelton and had devoted the best part of his life to the service of his district and to the service of the great mass of the people of New Zealand. The Hon. Mr. Rhodes said that the Me Mr. Laurenson had championed every cause which he believed to be just and tended towards the uplifting of humanity.
