HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED REPORT. The Department of Agriculture. Indus> tries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Com* missioner for New Zealand, dated London, 27th June. ' (Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot) :—: — Mutton. — There is a poorer demand for mutton, the result of the heavy ar rivals of inferior chilled beef from Monte Video. Canterbury, 4|d per lb for light weight; North Island, 4jfd for light weight. _ , ,^ Lamb. — A fair demand continues. The demand has been chiefly for light weights. Canterbury two's 6jd per lb, heavy-weights s|d ; other than Canterbury, 6 3-16 d for light-weight. Beef.— There is scarcely any demand for beef. Quotations for New Zealand beef are nominal New Zealand hinds, 4§d per lb, fores, 3|d; chilled beef, best quality hinds sd, *ores ,'s£d. Inferior quality have been selling at— hinds 4d, fores, 2^d. Butter. — The market Is steady. Danish, steady, per cwt. 116s to 118s j Now Zealand, prices nominal, 110s to I14s ; Australian, slow demand, 100s to 104s; Irish, firm, quiet, 108s to 110s ; Siberian, 6teady, 98s to 102. Cheese. — Tho market is slightly weaker With less Remand. Canadian, new make, slow trade, white, per cwt 62s to 63, coloured 63s 6d ; New Zealand, dull, white, 62s 6d to 63s 6d, coloured 63s 6d to 64s 6d ; English cheddar, market steady, new make, 68s to 725, fine 62s to 665. Hemp. — The market is dull. Supplies of fibres are large. New Zealand, good, fair £25 10s per ton, fair £23, forward shipment at same price. Manila, fair current £24 per ton. October to December shipment, £25. The output from Manila for the week was 18,000 bales. Hops. — English, market quiet, but steady. American, market firm, with an upward tendency. Continental, market steady, and a fair business doing. Wool. — The market is very firm. There is large demand for belter grades for America. Prospects are favourable.
Losses on racehorses were reported to have led to the failure of Lady Mary Dundas, daughter of the Dowager Countess of Lindsey and widow of Major Dtindae. whose creditors met recently in the London Bankruptcy Court. In June, 1912, the chairman staled, Lady Mary bought a racehorse called Glinka and another called Lauder. for which she paid 280 guineas. Lauder was sold for 80 guineas, while Glinka, for whom she gavo "480 guineas, was sold for £100. Another horse which she bought for 150 guineas strained its back and had to be kilted. She considered that on the horses she had lo3t between £2000 and £3000. She stated that she was not insolvent if a certain settlement were set aside. The case went into bankruptcy.
