PUPILS AND THE CANE

A few days ago a pupil at the Wellington Boys' College was subjected to corporal punishment by a prefect for smoking, and, as the result of 'physical weakness at the time, consequent upon a recent illness, fainted. The incident attracted much attention at_ the time, and this morning it, was discussed in committee by the Board of Governors ,of the College. A report on the ' subject was received from the headmaster of the college. The result of the ' board's deliberations is that corporal punishment by prefects at the college will be abolished.
