BOAG, WAYMOUTH AND CO.
Electrical and General Engineers. 18, King' Street, Palmerston North. It has long been impossible for any individual to give adequate expression to the fulness of the combination of contemporary science, art, knowledge, and practice which we recognise for engineering. Engineers constitute more than a profession; they amount, to a " race " ; and it is upon them more than any other class of the civilised world that falls the heaviest share of our burdens. Material civilisation owes much to them. Others may plot and scheme, discover wants and their proper supplies; the engineer as a rule does what he is told wants doing;. By strict attention to his own business he helps to make the crooked places straight and the rough places plain for all. The engineer must have great power for concentration. His solicitude is to make every job a little better than the last. With these prefatory remarks we pass on to a review of the engineering business of Boag, Waymouth and Co., whose achievements in the various departments of scientific skill in which they exert themselves render our review of_ Palmerston's leading businesses essential to the completeness of this special edition. The firm commenced business in Kingstreet, Palmerston North, in the beginning of 1913, and the rapid strides made by them are manifest when one visits their up-to-date premises. Their workshop is completely equipped with all modern appliances tor coping with work o£ a high-class engineering nature, and tho utmost satisfaction is guaranteed in regard to all work entrusted to them. The principals and staff are men possessing many years' English and colonial experience. AGENCIES. They also control the MATCHLESS MOTOR CYCLES. These machines have always held a prominent position in trials and competitions the world over. Since taking charge of the agency in 1913 they have won the New Zealand championship and established fastest times at Wanganui, Tauherenikau, Trentham, Hastings, Woodville, Marton, and Awapuni, and won outright tho Hudson Cup for best performance in the Manawatu Motor Cycle Club Easter reliability trial, also the side-car trial, and gained the nonstop in Hunterville trial, as well as the Hawkes Bay light-weight championship. These celebrated machines are on exhibition at Boag, Waymouth and Co.'s premises, and visitors to Palmerston are invited to inspect. Tho firm do not confine their business to the agencies referred to, but, in addition, undertake the repair and overhaul of any make and style of motor car, lorry, and cycle. Mr. Browning conducts a very extensive business in the carriage-building line. Every kind of vehicle is made wholly on the premises by a competent staff of workmen, and as for repairs the establishment' is noted for promptness, neatness, and reliable workmanship, and, with a view of meeting the popular demand, another important branch has been a"dded to the business in motorbody building, repairing of motor bodies, painting, and generally renovating everything in connection therewith. AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRY FOR PALMERSTON NORTH.. At last thero has been established in Palmerston North an up-to-date perambulator and go-cart factory^ where baby carriages of the latest design are made and repaired. Mr. A. A. Wood, the proprietor, is a thoroughly competent tradosman, having had many ? years' experience in the best establishments in the Dominion, and the rapid growth of his business fully demonstrates the urgent need there was for a factory of the kind in a central position inthe North Island. The writer had the privilege a few days ago of being shown through ..the factory, which is located right opposite the southern 'entrance to the Palmerston railway platform, and here can be seen go-carts and prams of various designs in every stage of construction. Mr. Wood has upwards of 30 different designs to select from, and a good stock is displayed in the showroom adjacent to the factory. There is one special feature about all perambulators and go-carts manufactured by Mr. Wood, and that is there is absolutely nothing whatever used in their construction but the best class of well-seasoned timber and materials generally. These Well-made prams are supplied wholesale to the trade, 1 or can be purchased direct from the factory by individual users. Mr. Wood is in a position to execute orders of any magnitude, and for his ability in repairing all kinds and sizes he is more than locally renowned. A huge stock of wheels, tires, and all tho necessary parts of the complete pram is kept on hand, and repairs are effected promptly and efficiently. Hoods are re-covered m any colouring, and old prams are made to look like new. Those visiting the great National Dairy Show during the present week are specially invited to call at Mr. Wood s establishment, and inspect the various lines here displayed. It is a well-recognised fact that the imported pram cannot compare with those made m our own country, neither in tho matter of price nor quality of workmanship. Ocular demonstration was given the writer of this recently, when a shipment reached this country in damaged condition, and when taken to pieces preparatory to repair, all the woodwork was found to be the cheapest procurable, while it was only dressed on one side, and the padding was also of a very inferior quality, and did not look at all healthy. The motto of every New Zealander should be to patronise an industry established in your midst, and keep the money in New Zealand. Inspect Wood's latest designs — they are unique and sold at reasonable price's. CROUCHER'S ART NEEDLE DEPOT. Next Standard Office, Palmerston North. Ladies at all interested in art needle work, or who are i desirous of competing at shows are specially invited to consult the 1 lady specialist, whose pupils have been the most consistent and most successful prize-winners at many of the shows for years past. There is ono branch of Croucher's business which demands special mention, and that is the country order business. A point is made of promptly answering all communications, and clients' orders are faithfully fulfilled; it matters not where they live, they will receive the same just attention as if they called at the Show. Anyone is welcome to call and inspect our goods. Thero is something here to interest every lady visitor to tho Show, and to them wo say, "Call at Croucher's." 'HOLSTEIN-FRIESIAN CATTLE.
