In the Magistrate's Court today, beffore Mr. D. 0. A. Cooper, S.M., Florence Grace Ward, for whom Mr. Jackson appeared, pleaded guilty to the theft of .thte« umbrellas, value £1 11s &d, from ithe shop oi' Woi. Hornig. "She can't tell me why ehe takes these things," said Mr. Jackson. _ "She was not •drunk." His Worship sent her to gaol tfol 1 seven days. John M'Atthur pleaded guilty to having been drunk in Manners-street on 'Saturday night and -with having resisted Constable Gunn. He denied having assaulted Sergeant Caseidy in the Man-lners-etreet police .station yesterday morning. Sergeant Cassidy said the man ire-fused to -wash in the- yard and struck !him in the face. Accused said theTe was one bticket of water for ten men to wash (La. The sergeant struck him and called ihini arafc. 'l n h« constable said every prieonei' had a bucket of water for hie own <us£. "The man behaved like a blackguard," declared Sergeant Caseidy. Inspector Hendrey 6aid the main was arrested, for drunkenness in Mannersstreet at 9.10 on Saturday night. His was very bad, and it took four (constables to carry him to the station. His behaviour nearly caused a riot, His age was given as IJ> years, For drunk'eniiess accused was convicted and, discharged, and on the other two charges ihe was fined £2, in default cix da-ya' imprisonment. Richard Evans pleaded guilty to haydng committed a grossly indecent act in ■Cuba'street. He wae fined. £2, or fourteen days' imprisonment in default. Louis John Cray, for whom Mr. 'Wesson appeared, pleaded guilty to having assaulted Frank Flanagan on Saturday night. He was fined £1, with 4s costs, tin default three days' imprisonment. Frederick Thomas M'CJregor, fbr whom Mr. O'Leary appeared, pleaded not guilty _ to a charge of having stolen a .quantity of goods from the premises of jMessrs. Kirkcaldie and Stains, He was remanded for a week, bail being allowed fin a personal bond of £50, and two sureties of £25 each. In connection with *ue same case, John Dwyer, George Wil3iams, and John M 'Donald were charged ,yi/ith receiving some of the goods, knowing them to have been stolen. They ,wero remanded until Monday next, bail ibeing fixed as in the case of M'Oregor. 'Mr. O'Leary appeared for Dwyer and {Williams. For insobriety sixteen first offenders /were convicted and discharged. Previous Offenders were dealt , witli as under : — • ■John George, 10s or forty-eight hours' ; ,€h»rles Coyle, 20s or fourteen days' ; CBruce M'Landen, 40s or seven days'; 'John M'Aninery, 10s or forty-eight liours' ; James M'Keover, 20s or three days' } Frank Adair, 40s or one month ; Sarah Hooker, 10s or forty-eight hours'- ' John Price, charged -with a similar offence, was remanded until .to-morrow. Hugh Fahey, for whom Mr. M'Crath appeared, was charged on remand with having useel obscene language at Wellington on lbth April. Inspector Hendrey asked for a further remand, as his /principal witness was. seriously ill and could not attend. Mr. iu'Grath strongly opposed the application, and in doing so expressed the firm belief that even if the caso was heard there was no chance of securing a, conviction. His (Worship dismissed tho information. Surah Sorrell. charged with having iprocured liquor for a prohibited person, wag fined £1. with costs (7s), in default seven days' imprisonment.
