HEAVY-WEIGHT BOXING
— — .A _ LOWE BEATS BAIITLETT. (BY TSLEOTIAPH.— MESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, 28th May. The contest between Bartlett (challenger), of Christchurch, and Lowe (holder), of Gisborne, for the professional heavy- sveight boxing championship of New Zealand and a purse of £75, attracted an audience that filled the Opera House to overcrowding. Lowe weighed list 101b, and Bartlett 12st 21b. It proved one of tho most strenuous heavy-weight contests held in this district, although really heavy effective hitting was not very prevalent. By common consent Bartlett must be given credit for showing more aggressiveness I against Lowe than any previous opponent. He did his best, however, only at close quarters. In the seventh round Lowe was struck down by an unexpected bacly. hand blow, but after waiting down as long as possible, returned to the fray, litt-ie the worse. « The contest ended at the close of tho eleventh round, as a, reßttU of Bartlett giving up on account of injured wrists, which had been troubling him since the fifth round.
