SCUTTLED
AND THEN SET ON FIRE BARQUE SVENOR. (By Tele-graph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) HOBART, 22nd May. The steamer Waiuui has arrived at Strahan, with Captain Monson and the officers and crew of the barque Svenor on board. The barque had previously been reported on fire at sea, twelve miles v/est of Mount Heemskirk. The Svenor was en route from Fremantle to Newcastle in ballast, and when twenty-two days out the ballast shifted, and the vessel was thrown on her beam ends. Her masts were cut away, and she drifted for nearly a fortnight, till sighted by tho Wainui. An attempt to tow the barque to port failed, and it was decided to abandon her. Prior to leaving tho vessel, in order to prevent her being a danger to navigation, the Svenor was scuttled, and then set on n're. The crew left in boats, and were picked up by the Wainui. FORMERLY A BRITISH VESSEL. (Received May 23, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Svenor was a steel barque of 1266 tons. She was formerly a Britisli vessel known as Corry Vrechan, and hailed from Sandefjord, Norway.
