DAMAGE BY FIRE
PRIVATE HOTEL DESTROYED. (BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 20th May. The Glasgow Coffee Palace Private Hotel in Manchester-street was destroyed by fire early this evening. It was a two-storied builditig of fourteen rooms, the first floor and the ground floor being used as a restaurant. The fire originated near the bathroom, and when the brigade arrived the flames had gained a solid hold on the wooden framework. The blaze was extinguished very promptly, but the building was practically gutted. The furniture and fittings were insured for £250 in the Norwich Union Office. The tenant estimates his loss at £100. OUTBREAK ISTEAR A MAGAZINE. AUCKLAND, 20th May. A six-roomed house belonging to the Government and occupied by Captain Mickle, Officer in Charge of the Permanent Artillery (Auckland Division) was completely destroyed by fir» at North Head to-night. All the contents were practically, destroyed. The furniture was insured in the Commercial Union office for £250, and the loss is estimated at £400. "Whether the house is insured by the Government or not is uncertain. The dwelling was valued at £600. ' The building was within one hundred yards of the main magazine of the forts. This created alarm in the neighbourhood, arid a gang of artillerymen was employed in covering the ventilators of the magazine and preventing the ingress of any sparks. Captain Mickle states that the cordite stored in the magazine was in such form that there waa no danger.
