WESTERN AUSTRALIA
COUNCIL v ELECTION. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received May 21, 9.20 a.m.) PERTH, This Day. The elections 1 resulted in Labour being defeated in every province. It is computed that Labour also lost one seat previously held. The new Country Party obtained two seats, but failed to displace any retiring Liberal member. [Labour contested four of the seats on the Council, and there was also an Independent Labour candidate. The Farmers and Settlers' Association, a newly-formed political party, also ran candidates in opposition to the Liberal nominees. Tho elections will not materially affect the position of parties in the Legislative Council of the State, which, prior to tho polling, was — Labour 7, anti-Labour 23. The franchise for the Second Chamber is a restricted one, permitting of plural voting on property rights. The Premier (Mr. Spaddan), for the Labour Government, is vigorously advocating the abolition of the Second Chamber • The relations between his Government and the Liberal majority in the Legislative Council are not likely to be improved as a result of the elections. Labour's failure to win any of the seats is sure to harden up the Liberal opposition to Labour measures in the Second Chamber.]
