SHOCKING SENSATION LITTLE GIRL'S THROAT CUT. HER FATHER ARRESTED. (BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, 19th May. A shocking affair occurred in Beres-ford-street this afternoon, when a. girl named Evelyn Tynan had her throat cut^sevrely, her father being immediately arrested on a charge of attempted murder. The child was at once taken, to the hospital in a critical condition. A Bitting of the Court was .subsequently held at the hospital, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., when tho depositions of tho little girl wore taken, in the presence of her father. There were^ also present Inspector M'Grath, Chief-Detective M'Mahon, and Dr. Maguire, superintendent of the hospital. William. Tynan was then charged by Inspector M'Grath with having wilfully attempted to murder his daughter Evelyn, by cutting her throat with a razor, to which accused replied, "I believe I did." The girl, who was sufficiently stimulated to understand and answer quea' tions put to her by the Inspector, said she had come out of school and walked up Beresfovd-etreet with another girl. When they reached Day-etreet corner she was suddenly hit by someone whom fehe could not see, and who she thought iv as swearing loudly. Then she caught sight of her father with a. Tazor in his ,hand and he was cutting her head off with it. _ When she felt her throat and arm paining her, she managed to escape from her attacker's clutches, and ran up to a lady Avho lived in a. house near-by. The next thing she remembered was that she was in a cab. She recognised her father. Accused wa-s then permitted to crossexamine witness, and asked :—: — "Why did you not speak to me when I was down last week?^' N Witness: "I did speak to you." "Why did you not give me a kiss today, and why did you call mo 'drunkard' ?" The girl said she did not call him "d-runkard," and she did not kiss him because she smelt liquor on him. This concluded the enquiry, and acoused was remanded for a week. The girl's condition is very low. j
