Two prisoners, named Mnronoy and Downey, escaped from the Launcestoi* Gaol in March last, and vere rearreeted) at Albany. They were returning by the at/earner Indarra, .in charge of two conn stables, and when entering the bay JDowi ney complained of illness, and left his cabin in charge of one of the constables, Maroney and the other constable remaining. The door of the' cabin was closed but not locked, and Maroney dash« cd out. The constable, who was asleep, awoke and chased .the man round the decks. The fugitive snatched a lifebelt' and jumped overboard. Meantime, Downey mad© a desperato' attempt to escape, but was overpowered and handcuffed. The eteamer was stopped atid an unavailing eearch Was made for Maroaey. The jump was made four miles from land, and it is believed Maroney was drowei cd.
