ABATTOIR IMPROVEMENTS

TO BE MADE AT ONCE. CLOSE VOTING AGAIN. The extensive improvements required at the abattoir are to be carried out at once. The City Council decided last night that the mone-ye of the Abattoir Fund should be used for the purpose, and that if they are not sufficient, any deficiency is to be made up from the District Fund. In the course of a discussion on th«> matter, Councillor Frost said that quite apart from the legal aspect, he objected to paying for permanent works out of the slaughtering fee 3, on grounds of common fair play. Councillor Fletcher also opposed tho motion. It was quite wrong to pay for the work out of tho slaughtering fees. The Mayor said that it was necessary to get the abattoir fitted up so that the slaughtering could bo done for the public under the best conditions as early an possible. The cost would come most heavily on the District Fund, perhaps to the extent of three-fourths. The moneys to be used would simply be any accrued moneys which were available for the purpose. The Abattoir Fund account showed a. balance of £1049 in the bank and £887 on deposit, and at least £800 would have to be paid out of the District Fund, Councillors Fletcher and Frost desiring a division, tho motion was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. The Mayor said he wished to express his difapproval of the action of members ot the Finance Committee voting at the council meeting in opposition to the clause sent down by the committee. j Councillor Fletcher : I quite agree. I'm not on the committee. Councillor Buddie explained that he was absent from tho meeting of tho committee. Councillor Barber said that he understood, from information which he did not possess at the meeting, the fund included fees the Muplus of which had to be redistributed t<> the butchers, ft was in opposition to the principle of using that money tor purposes of works that I he had now \otcd against the motion.
