MAGISTRATE'S COURT
To-day s sitting of the Magistrate's Court was ' " presided * over by Mr, D. G. A. Oooper, S.M. , Mary Joyce, described as an unfortunate abandoned woman, was fined 10s, with tho alternative of 48 hours\ imprisonment, for drunkenness, and ordered to pay the valuo of two windows, the property of Jane Milne, which she had broken, tho option being fixed at one month's imprisonment. For drunkenness, John Vobbe, with four previous convictions, was fined 40s, with the alternative of 14 daye' imprisonment. Frank M'Guire and Edward Nolan, who were similarly charged, wero each fined 10s, with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment. ' James M'Donald, alias Chote, denied the theft of an overcoat, the property of Simon Frascr, from a, bedroom in a city hotel. The accused's story was that the coat had been handed to him by an acquaintance to cell on his behalf. The evidence was against the accused, who was convicted and sent to gaol for one month. Ho had previously served a sentence- of two years for indecent assault. JUDGMENT BY DEFAULT. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given by Mr. W. G. Nicol the sum of £11 18s 6d or or before 28th May, in default i undergo ten days' imprisonment;, E. D. Richards to pay Chas: Pratt and Co. (as assignees of James Stellin) tho sum of £15 8s 3d betore 29th June, in default fourteen days' imprisonment in the Palmerston Gaol. JUVENILE CASES At a sitting of the Juvenile Court today Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., convicted and discharged two boys under 16 years of age for unlawfully discharging a firearm, a peariflc, at Kilbirnio. Anothor boy admitted throwing a. stone to the danger of certain property, while a fourtti was found guilty of wilfully damaging a plategla-ss window, valued at £9, the property of Frank Coozc. Both wero admonished and discharged.
At the suggestion of the Auckland Association, a conference of hockey referees will be held in Wellington on the 12th of next month. Delegates from all the principal referees' associations throughout the Dominion will attend, as the question of reforming the New Zealand Hockey Referees' Association will be considered. It is generally anticipated that a new association will come into existence. Several other matters pertaining to the position of tho referees will be discussed. Tho Kalanmzoo Looselea<f Ledger and Wagoner File agency has been scoured by H. W. Young, Limited, who have opehed an office in Routh's Buildings under tho supervision of Mr. W. E. H. Knowles, who states that he will be pleased to demonstrate the system to prospective clients, Tho management states that these ledgers are being uecd extensively ill the British Dominions by many leading businesses. An advertisement appears in our columns. Messrs. E. Johnston and Co. will hold an auction sale of furniture in their rooms to-morrow.
