ENGAGED FOR NO-LICENSE CAMPAIGN
MR. PHILIP SNOWDEN TO COME TO NEW ZEALAND. The Post is officially informed that Mr. Philip Snowden, Socialist member for Blackburn in the British House of Commons^ and Mrs. Snowden, have been engaged in connection with the coming No-license campaign, and will arrive in .New Zealand in September. Mr. Snowden is one of the foremost Socialist leadera^of the day, and is an ardent worker in the temperance cause. Through medium of the -cable service and his various publications on Socialism he is Well known even in this distant paii of the globe. He iB a Yorkshireman by birth, being born at Cowling in 1864. In 1886 he obtained a post in the- Inland Revenue Department, but in 1893 he retired and devoted himself to journalism and lecturing. About this time he was seriously injured in a bicycle accident, from which he recovered. Afterwards he joined the United Labour Party, of which he has been an eloquent advocate ever since. In 1908 he married the daughter of Mr. Richard Annakin, of Harrogate. The following year Socialism had its j first great victory, Mr. Snowden being elected second member for Blackburn. The voting was : Sir w . H. Hornby (Conservative), 10,291 j P. Snowden (Labour), 10,282; G. Draga (Conservative), 8y32; X Hamer (Liberal), 8892 ; aggregate Conservative majority over Liberal and Labour 49. He has represented Blackburn ever since, and was a member of the Royal Commission on Canada and Waterways, and of the Royal Commission of the Civil Service.
