LYTTELTON TUNNEL

DUPLICATION ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. (BY TELSOnAPH.— FRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A deputation from local bodies to-day urged upon the Hon. W. H. -Herries the electrification of_ the Lyttelton tunnel. The Minister said the Department was now considering the question of duplication of the line through the tunnel. _ It would have to decide whether duplication or electrification should be taken in hand first. The Department could hardly do both at the same time. His officers strongly advised that duplication was absolutely necessary, and this session he proposed to introduce a Bill giving power to borrow a considerable sum of money to carry out railway works at Wellington, Auckland, Lyttelton, Christchurch, Invercargill, and other places where there was congested traffic.
