HUTT RIVER BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. _ The Hutt River Board met last evening, the following being present : Messrs. H. Baldwin (in the chair), W. Bowers, and W. Knight. Reporting on the work of the past fortnight, the overseer (Mr. F. Kershaw) stated that the removing of logs at Stokes Valley was not completed yet on account of the high river during- the month. Owing to the river rising to the height of 6 feet 6 inches abovo summer level on 15th inst., a scour had taken place just below the new work put in at Andrews's property. The river rose again on the 28th inst. to 7 feet, the result being that the gap at Andtvws's property was increased to a chain. It was necessary for the board to erect a groyne just above the property as soon as possible. It was recommended that a boom groyne be erected as soon as possible at the spot. The diversion cut recently completed did not do the work expected ot it, and the mouth of Belmont creek was blocked with boulders. Messrs. Hooper and Calcinai suffered considerable loss to their properties through scours. At Pitcaithly's new works the river had altered its course, and was scouring a deep channel along the railway embankment. Protection work was required to prevent damage being occasioned at Melling bridge. Extensions to other groynes were recommended. The report was adopted.
