DELAYED INCOME TAX RETURNS
MERCHANT FINED. AUCKLAND, Ui May. ' Benjamin Williams, a Dargaville merchant, was to-day fined iJoO on six charges of failing to furnish land and income tax returns. The Department pressed for a heavy penalty, for the de-~ fendant had taken practically so notice of the Department's demands. The case had originally been Bet down for an earlier date, and on a promise of the' defendant to rectify his omission had been adjourned. He, however, had' failed to fulfil the promise. Mr. Buttle, counsel for, defendant, •aid that the returns had been so involved that defendant had applied to the .Uepartinent) for the services of an. officer to assist him. The officer, however, had not been available, and the matter had been allowed to run on. The Magistrate pointed out that defendant was liable to a penalty of £100 for 1 each of his six ofiences. Williams had been deliberate in his offences, but there 'was a certain amount of excuse {ot him A fine of £5 would be imposed in regard to each offence.
