LOSS OF LIFE BELIEVED TO BE HEAVY. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received April 3, 11.30 a.m.) ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland), 2nd April. The steamer Newfoundland reports that the sealing vessel Southern Cross was crushed by the ice and sank off Cape Race. It is believed over one hundred of the crew perished. The Newfoundland rescued fifty. Many were dead and others dying. The crew took refuge on icefloes after Ihe Southern Cross sank.
