MAGISTRATE'S COURT
To-day's sitting of tbe Magistrate's Court was persided over by Mr. D. G* A. Cooppr. S.M. Mary Sprowell was sent to gaol for a month on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, and fined 10s for drunkenness. A charge of stealing a, purse and £1 18s in money, the property of Margaret Webb, was preferred against TheresaEussell, Lenora- Parker (alias Reid), James Malcolm Wood, and Harry Tamin, all of whom, on the application of Mr. Kelly, were remanded till Monday. Leslie Ashcroft Edwards, who endeavoured to race a train while driving a motor-van, and then dashed over a-cross-ing at Petone in front of the engine, at a speed of twenty miles an hour, failed to appear in answer to two charges : (1) Driving across a railway line when a train was within half a. mile ; and (2) driving at a greater speed than ten miles an hour across a level crossing. Defendant was fined £1 on the firsfi charge, and convicted and discharged on the other information. The man was also ordered to pay £2 15s cost*. John Bailey was fined ss, with costs (7s), for driving an express round the corner of Cuba and Vivian streets at other than a walking pace. Charged with riding a, motor-cycle and failing to keep on the right side of the road, Charles Johnston was fined ss, with costs (7&), as was also Howard Spackman, who had failed to attach a, tail-light to his motor-car after sunset. James Dykes, charged with a similar offence, was ordered to pay Court costs (7s). Arthur Menee, for riding a motorcycle round a corner at a dangerous rate of speed, was fined ss, with 7s costs. For failing to observe a motor bylaw in respect to the Featherston-street stand, Dan Fraser was fined Is, with costs. Henry Hall was mulcted in Court costs for driving a motor-car without a tail-light. James- Scanlon and Arthur Wilson were each ordered to pay costs because they had driven cattle along the «am road at Johnsonville between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. without harness or yoke. Carl Lutz was convicted and ordered 'to pay costs on a charge of having left a motor-oar in Hunter-street unattended for a period longer than five minutes. The defendant, who pleaded guilty, war in ignorance of the bylaw. For failing to send their children to school tho required number of days, George Monk, Ooorgo Monk (son.). William M'Millan, John Nicol, John Williams, Kriward JJoulton, Joseph Cami' thers, Alfred Churchill, Ernest Dally, and William ,T. Solomon wpre each fined 2s, witli costs 7s. James Footlioad, Kdward H. Grcon, and Jesse Jackson, all of whom were similarly charged, wer& each fined 5s 3 and costs 7s. Maud Clark was ordered by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper to enter into a bond for £10 to keep the peace for twelve months lowauls Florence Lansdown.
A petition is being circulated asking /or the release of the men who were imprisoned in connection with the leccnt strike disturbances.
