IN COMMEMORATION FOUNDING OF WELLINGTON

SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT. Next year will be the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Wellington, and the Wellington Early Settlers' Association is desirous of having a civic celebration worthy of the occasion. With this object in view, a deputation headed by the Hon. J. E. Jenkinson as spokesman, waited on the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) yesterday afternoon, and suggested ideas. It was not probable that they wquld have many of the pioneers with them after this anniversary, and he hoped that the Mayor would help them to get the sympathy of the council and make the function a success. They did not want the dates to clash with that of the next carnival. He suggested that the Mayor and the council could lake such steps as would bring about a meeting of citizens and representative men for the purpose of furthering the object and forming committees in different towns in the province, so that the gathering might be thoroughly representative. There wa6 no reason why the carnival and the anniversary should not run together, or why a three days' demonstration should not be held. If the Citizens' Committee would only take it up there was no reason why it should not run for a week. The Mayor expressed his appreciation of the suggestion that the anniversary celebration and the carnival should be merged. The Carnival Committee would take it into consideration. They found a difficulty in carrying on the carnival for four days, and he did not think the executive would take it up for a longer period, for the people did not respond on tho last occasion as readily as was hoped. The committee, however, was not discouraged. Ho was thoroughly'in i accord with having the carnival on Anniversary Day, for they ought to make more of that day than they did. He would layxhe matter before the Carnival Committee and the City Council.
