SHUT DOWN
STATE MANUFACTURE OF BEET SUGAR. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ■SYDNEY, 29th March. , After the expenditure of a lot of money the Government of Victoria has decided to shut down for the second and last time a factory set going in that State for the manufacture of beet sugar. The thing has failed badly, even with the selectors of land in the neighbourhood of the factory being obliged by the Government to grc-w a certain, quantity of beet root. Tho Government Vi&s been taught at the expense of the taxpayer that it is well to 'keep to forms of production which conditions of climate and soil and market encourage most. The idea of compelling settlers to grow a particular crop has proved very expensive and lallacious. It is calculated that the experiment has cost the Government about £200,000, and it has incidentally m&ttnt tho unprofitable occupation of much land.
