After several days of showery weather, the conditions have improved, and indications point to a fine spell. , Many visitors from outeido districts have arrived in town, in view of the Opaki races, which commence to-morrow, Should the weather _ conditions be favour* able, a record meeting is anticipated. A polo tournament was commenced at. Te t Ore Ore yesterday, Wairarapa and Waipukuraw Clubs each having two teams competing. The games were witnessed ' by a large crowd ol spectators, including many ladies, but the play was not inter* esting, owing to the teams being un« evenly matched, The cause was that the A team in each case played the opposing B team. The games r<teulted as follows! — -Waipukurau A defeated Wairarapa B, by 17 goals to nil. Wilde scored eight goals, and Walker, Parsons, and Donelly three goals each. Wairarapa A avengoa the trouncing received by _ their B team by decisively beating the visitors' B team by 13 goals to nil. For the winners, goals were scored by Erl Williams (6), D. Riddiford (4), F. Evans (2). and R. N. Barton (1). During the play, Hughes, a Wairarapa player, received a severe nit on the right eye, a nasty gash being in* • flicted, necessitating eeveral stitches. Tho Very Rev. Dean M'Konna, V.G., was last evening entertained by the nupns of St. Bride's Conveht at a complimen* tary concert, and presented with an address of welcome from tho sisters and' children. Mr. D. P. Williams, who has for some time mahaged tho drapery business of Mr. P. Hatnill, of Masterton, has severed ,Ins connection with that firm, and is leaving for Wellington. Laßfc evoniug Mr. Wil' lining received a present from other lnomhers of the staff. His Lordship Bishop Sprott will conduct service at St. Matthew's Oiiuroh on Good Friday. . It was decided at a special meeting of the financial committee of v tho Borough Council that the Mayor (Mr. J. M. Cori. dine) and Mr. W. G. Sellar proceed to Wellington with a viow to making, tho best possible arrangements for the rawing of the loans recently, sanctioned by the ratepayers, and amounting to £26,500. At a meeting ot the Eketahuna branch of Iho Earners' Union, on Saturday, it was decided to forward a, fomit te the Provincial Conference urging that a tax be placed on all motor cars and the money so raised be spent in improving < arterial roads. At tho annual meeting of the Suwssi JDredgihg Company last evening, Mr. John Hossey was unanimously re-elected to the position of sole director of the company. Complimentary reference was made to the satisfactory balance-sheet presented, and tho sound financial position of the company. Mr. A. Congdon, the Maaterton »ma« teur billiardist, receiving 200 in 750 up, defeated Alec Taylot, tho London professional euoisfc, last evening, tho final scores " being— Oongdon 750, Taylor 541. ' Messrs. Donald and Son, engineers, of Masterton, wero awarded fibst-elass ccl 1 ' tific&tea by the judges 'at tho Auckland Exhibition for their exhibit of lifting-Jacks. Colonel Vanderbilt'B yacht, the Warrior, which recently went ashore on the coast of Colombia, has been abandoned, It may be remembered that after Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt and their guests, the Duke and Uuchess of Mnm:l)pster and Lord Falconer, wove rescued from their perilous position ou the yatlili tho master and crew stuck to the veiM, hoping to save her.
