PAINTERS UNION PICNIC
The annual picnic of the Wellington Paint el* and Decorators' Union, which was allowed to lapse for several years, was revived on Salurdayj when an enjoyable outing wa& spent bjwthe local tradesmen, their wives, families, and friends at Day's Bay. The committee in. charge of the .arrangements comprised :— Mos&re. J., Hall, H. Plank,' F. Wallis, W. Douglas W. Cooper, E. Kinward, and D. Matthews. During ths afternoon a sporte programme was gob off, Mr. T. Wilmot acting a« handicapper and Mr, P. O'Neill as starter. Mr. F. Cornvill officiated a* secretary. Very suddenly the dpath occurred in London of Senor Marx de Alamr, whone marriage with Miss Katie Mills, eldobt daughter of Sir James Mills, was to nave taken place in the near future. The de« ccasod gentleman, who had been suffering from phlebitis, was taken ill in tho street one evening ; he was helped into an hotel, and later moved to Charing Cross Hospital, where death occurred tho following morning. Senor Marx da Alcazar was popular with the Spanish Royal Household ; indeed, he it was who taught Spanish to Queen Ena before her marriage to King Alfonso. In recognition of its services at the fire in Wakefield-street last week, tho Fire Brigade has received ft cheque for £3 3s from Messrs. Laery and Co. Iho amount goes to the recreation fund. Mies Ellen Terry, on the subject, of her discourses which she will deliver in New Zealand and Australia: "t have no special favourites among Shakespeare's heroines.
