Turner, R.N.R., who has been in command of the Mauretania since 1910, to command of the Aquitania. He joined the Cunard service in 1877, and thD Cunard ships he has commanded include the Carpathia, Inverma, Uraoria, Caronia, Carmania, and Lusitania. Captain Turner, who is an honorary commander in the Royal Naval Reserve, and holds the Royal Humane Society medal for lifesaving, and the transport medal for service during the Boer War, began his career as a deck boy in the Liverpool sailing ship White Star, and went round the world, returning home in the windjammer Queen of the Nations, of which his father was skipper. PERSONAL. Mr. A. V. Barton joined the Monowai yesterday as fourth officer. The officers with Captain Beck on the Star of Victoria are as follow :— Chief, Mr J. J. Patterson; second, Mr C. THE APARIMA.It is reported that the Union Company's training steamer Aparimd left Singapore on Monday last for Calcutta. She is due at the Indian port to-morrow, and uill immediately commence loading Eastern cargo for New Zealand. COAL FROM NEWCASTLE. The coal trade between Newcastle and New Zealand ports continues to be fairly brisk, although there have been no special charters for some time. The conditions now are normal, such as prevailed prior to the strike. The Wairuna arrived at Auckland yesterday from the New South Wales port, and several other colliers are now on their way to the Dominion. The Kaitangata is due to leave shortly coal laden for Picton, New Plymouth, and Wellington. The Koromiko is expected to leave Newcastle next Saturday for Auckland, and the Waipori has also been fixed to load for the same destination. The big collier Waihora will leave Wellington to-night for Newcastle to load again for Port Nicholson. TOKOHXRU REPORTED FROM CAPETOWN. The Shaw-Savill liner Tokomaru passed Capetown last Monday en route to l*ew "Zealand In ballast. She will receive her loading orders on arrival at Wellington Heads. Although no information on the point is procurable at present, it is quite on the cards (says an exchange) that the Tokomaru may be employed in the carriage of frozen meat from New Zenland ports to Vancouver in the near future. Last night the postal authorities received a wireless message from the Riverina stating that the vessel will arrive at Auckland from Sydney direct at 11 a.m. to-morrow. The southern portion of the vessel's mails should reach Wellington on Monday afternoon. WAIMATE'S LOADING PORTS. Having completed her charter for the Union Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Waimate has commenced loading for the Home market under the auspices of her owners. *ext week she is to visit Oamaru, and later Bluff, Waitara, Pictou, and Wellington. She will sail on the 23rd April from this port for London. JESERIC DELAYED. Owing to very wet 'weather in Sydney the steamer Jeseric, from St. John to New Zealand ports, has been delayed at the New South Wales port. She is now fixed to sail for Auckland on Wednesday next, and is due here about the 9th April. HURUKUI AND WHAKATANE AT TENERIFFE. According to cable advice received by the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Hurunui, which loaded in the Dominion last February, and sailed from Auckland on the Ibth, reahed Teneriffe, en route to London, last Wednesday. She continued her journey the same day. The Whakatane arrived at the way poit from Wellington on thQ 23rd in&t., and is now due at Home. RUAPEHU REPORTED FROM MONTE VIDEO. A cablegram from Monte Video reports the arrival there on Thurbday at 6 a.m. of the R.M.S. Ruapehu. The Ruapehu left Wellington for London on the sth inst. The Mapouriks left Westport at 10 o'clock this morning for Wellington direct. The Tyser steamer Hawkes Bay is to leave Lyttelton early to-morrow morning for Wellington. Her departure for London has been fixed for daylight on Tuesday. Having completed her work at the Cook Strait lighthouses, the Government steamer Hinemoa arrived back in port yesterday afternoon. Before making her special visit of inspection of the various oyster beds gnd fishing grounds round the coast of New Zealand the vessel will be placed on the Patent Slip, probably on Tuesday. An expected arrival at Wellington is the auxiliary scow Echo, which left Karamea with a full cargo of timber on the lfth March. In all probability bhe has been delayed by unfavourable winds.
