VICTORIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
The annual meeting of the Victoria College Debating Society was held on Friday evening in the College Gymnasium, Mr A. E. Caddirk, M.\A.. being in the chair. The annual report and balance-sheet wp.re passed. It «ao statpd that one of the mosr. successful rapotings held during the year was the occasion of the public debate on the " Naval Problem of the Pacific." The Hon A. L. Herdman was thanked for presiding on that occasion, as w«re also Sir John Findlay and Profpssor Laby, for their eloquent addresses. If. was recommended that the arranging of public debates upon suitable subjects be the continuing policy of the society. The union prize for 'the best debater in the society for 1913 was awarded to Mr. A. )3^ Sievwright, with an average of 4.16 of a possible of 5 gained -at the regular fortnightly debates. The, new speakers' prize was won by Mr. 0. Borer, while, for the first time in the history of the competition, a lady. Miss M. L. Nicholh, won Lord PJunket's medal fov orotorv. Messrs. G. G. G. Watson and A. B. Sievwright have been selected to reprptent the society at the forthcoming toa=-' nampnt debate to be held at Chns*cbarch during Easter. rr 'lip following officers were elected :-- Patron, His Excellency foe Governor; ■)i-psident, Professor T H.
