DUNEDIN ITEMS MEDICAL SCHOOL.
THE PRICE OF COAL. (II IBUGRIPH.— SPXCIAL TO THE POfT.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The fund for the extension to the Ofcago Medical School building now stands at £5494. The objective is £7500. A hint has come from Australia that the Commonwealth coal mineowners may before the winter increase the price of coal. Labour troubles have, it is said, reduced the output considerably, and have increased the cost of production. It appears that the Australian coalminers are adverse to working afternoon and night shifts, and in the majority of mines the worjc is confined to the day shift. This has affected the output. During the past twelve months ihe price of sea-borne coal was raised owing to increased freight. Sportsmen are looking forward with lively anticipation to the opening of the deer-stalking season next month. Reports indicate attractive conditions generally, but particular interest"- appears to be centred in the opening of a new red deer country out of Tayanui, known as the Leathern White Comb district. Deer have enjoyed freedom there for some time, and alluring stories are told of their condition and points. The herd is said to contain many beautiful heads, but it is with bated breath almost that men talk of one monarch in the new district — A strong graceful ruler, with a noble crown of 19 points. All the deer-stalkers are after him. The first ballot for licenses in the new district was held last night. There was exceptionally keen competition, and six licenses were granted. The market for lambs still continues brisk locally, freezing buyers being keen to obtain as many consignments as possible, and prices are somewhat firmer than those ruling during the past two weeks. It is expected that they will remain firm for some time to come. Owing to the wet weather, and a shortage of fattening feed, very few prime lambs wijl be offering.
