PERCY'S GARDEN
' TO TBI EDITOK. Sir, — In a recent issue of The Post reference was made to the turning down by the Petone Council of the ownei 's offer to sell to the borough, and that probably no more would be heard of the proposal. In common with a large
number of ratepayers who have recently visited this beauty spot, I think a very grave error, not only for the present, but for the future, will be committed if this matter is allowed to be summarily disposed of. While I concede the right to any council to decline the responsibility of agreeing to purchase, in a question of this nature the ratepayers have the undoubted right of a voice as to whether this property should be secured or not, and to this end, I suggest that a public meeting should be called, with the objects : (1) Of inducing the owner to renew his offer to sell, and (2) in the event of his agreeing, that the council be instructed to put the question to a poll of the ratepayers. — I am, etc., JOSEPH PIPER. P.S. — I shall be pleased to meet any ratepayers interested, any evening after 7.
