CIGARETTE CURE AN AUSTRALIAN REMEDY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, 21st March.
In the interests of the Australian youth the Education Department of Victoria is taking a hand >in experiments in the employment of nitrate of silver aa an antidote for the tobacco craving and the destruction of the cigarette habit. It is said that Melbourne doctors approve of this remedy, which is new to Australia, but has been used for some time in America. Doctors explain that when the palate is sprayed with a solution of nitrate of silver the feeling is unpleasant, and the patient does not fail to show disgust on his face. The harsh, bitter taste endures for a long time, and if the patient attempts to smoke a, cigarette he realises at the first draw that if he does mot throw it away he will be sick. The mental effect of taking the remedy is said to be a powerful ally to the nitrate, which acts on the mucous membranes of the palate. Warmhearted enthusiasts for the welfare of boys are considering the matter of following an American lead by the establishment of an Anti- Cigarette League.
