¦ _^ — v PROFESSOE PICKBN'S APPOINTMENT. Professor D. K. Picken, M.A., of Victoria College, has been elected master of Ormond College, University of Melbourne. Within the university reserve of Melbourne there are four allotments of ten acres each set aside for the Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, and Wesleyan Churches, as sites for residential affiliated colleges. Ormond College, founded in 1881, is the property of the Presbyterian Church, and is named after Mr. Francis Ormohd, whose benefactions to the college amount to over £100,000. The college is in no way restricted to students, of the Presbyterian denomination, but is entirely open to students of the university. It has a staff of ten lecturers and tutors, the latter residing with the students. Government of the institution is by a council of 24, and the master of the college is ex officio a member of the council. The present master, Dr. J. H. MacFarland. who is retiring after service of thirty years, is also a member of the University Senate and Vice-Chancellor of the University. The election of Professor Picken to succeejl Dr. MacFarland is Subject to the approval of the General Assembly in May. Professor Picken graduated M.A. at Glasgow, with fii'st-class honours, winning the MetcaJfe Scholarship. He then proceeded to Cambridge, where he gained first a scholarship at Jesus College, and then the Ferguson Scholarship, open to graduates of the Scotch universities. In 1902 he graduated M.A. at Cambridge, being sixth wrangler in the mathematical tripos. After acting as chief assistant to the Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow for five years, he was elected to his present position of Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics at Victoria College. Professor Picken is the author of several mathematical publications, and is at present chairman of the Professorial Board at Victoria College, lie will take up his duties as master of Ormond College at the beginning of 1915.
