POLO PLAY SAVILE CUP CONTEST

CRT TELEGRAPH.— PUPS'! ASSOCHTION.) CHRr.STCHU.RCH, 23rd March. Polo play for the Savile Cup began at Hagley Park to-day in the presence of a large number of spectators. The ' competition was under the general supervision of Mr. R. Levin, secretary of the New Zealand Polo Association. HA WARDEN, 19; RANGIORA B, 1. Hawarden v. Rangiora B. — Teams : Hawarden — F. Davison, E. Davison, (.!. L. Rutherford, C. O. T. Rutherford. Rangiora B.— J. Chapman, E. Fear, D. ' Chapman, S. Townend. Soon after starting E. Davison took a nice pass from F. Davison and whipped it through Hawarden, I—o.1 — 0. A brief sortie led by S. Townend to the other end resulted in his being thrown and hurting his shoulder slightly. In the next spell Davison hit a clever long one j from a difficult angle and succeeded in scoring. Hawarden, 2—o.2 — 0. J. Chapman then headed a Rangiora rush which j resulted in a score from a long straight hit. Hawarden, 2—l. Warm play followed, Hawarden making the pace, and E. Davison legistering another goal, practically without opposition. Hawarden. 3—l.3 — 1. Soon afterwards clever playby T. Davison resulted in his galloping between the posts taking the ball with him, and then E. Davison galloped through all opposition and scored. Hawarden. s—l. In the third spell hot play in front of the posts gave E. Davison another chance, which he promptly seized, and shortly afterwards G. L. Rutherford scored. Just at the end of the spell G. L. Rutherford and E. Davison were associated in a rush which resulted in the latter putting the ball between the posts. Hawarden, B—l. From the fourth spell onwards the game was a succession of scoies for Hawarden. the final scores being: Hawarden, 19; Rangiora, 1. HAWKE'S BAY, 10; PAREORA,. 4. Teams. — Hawkes Bay: W. G. Stead. 0, Nelson, J. Lyons, E. Nairn. Pareo^a :S. G. Orbell, - P. Elworthy, A. S. Elworthy, H. Elworthy. The first spell opened briskly, and within a minute P. Elworthy scored for Pareora, but, almost immediately afterwards, Lyons equalised. ■ Open, fast play in mid-field wa3 followed by Nairn scoring. Hawkes Bay. 2— -1. In fcho second spell, even and fast pla> predominated, and the spell was ful' *v in* cident. Just on time, P. El worthy squared the scores — 2 all. Pareora- were hard pressed during the early stages of the next ppel l , and, aHnr a, brief melee in front of the posts, they saved by a long shot, but Stead intercepted, and shot a beautifully-accurate goal. Hawkss Bay. 3—2. The opening of the- fourth «pell was characterised by a. brilliant rush np-Sc-td by H. Elworthy, and, almost immediafely, O. Nelson scored. \ Hawkes Bay, 4—2. After some give-and-take play mostly in. mid-field, 0. Nelson again scored for Hawkes Bay. The fifth spell opened with fast play, which resulted iir Stead scoring. Hawkes Bay, 6—2.6 — 2. Pareora were now hard pressed for some iime, but a rally got the ball out of the danger zone just as time was sounded. The sixth spell opened briskly, and a, few minutes after play started P. Elworthy shot a fine goah Hawkes Bay, 6—3.6 — 3. Shortly afterwards, O. Nelson was successful in scoring for Hawkca Bay, and H. Elworthy followed with n. goal for Pareora. Then a brilliau* piece of play by 0. Nelson resulted in a score for the North Islanders. Hawkss Bay. B—4. The final spell "opened with, fast play. Stead got the ball well up, and O. Nelso'i, who was following, got 'the goa-J. Hawkes Bay, 9—4. A determined attack 6y Pareora was nullified by smart play, and soon after Nelson scored. Hawkes Bay, 10 — 4 The game ended shortly after. POVERTY BAY 4, HAWKES BAY A 1 Teams. --Hawkes Bay A : J. Ormond, F. M'Kenzie. H. A. Russell, W. 0. A. M'Kenzie. Poverty Bay. Phillips Sherratt, Thornley Sherratt, Randal Sherratt, John Murphy. Play opened very fast, and was well distributed. Poverty Bay drew first blood, P. Sherratt shooting a brilliant goal. The spell ended soon after. Play continued fast and exciting, but the second spell saw no addition to the score. Hawkes Bay opened the third spell Btrongly, but gradually Poverty Bay transferred play to their opponent's territory. Whilst an exciting melee was in progress Thornley Sherratt's pony had a fetlock broken, and play was stopped for a while. When the game resumed Poverty Bay attacked, and J. Murphy fflored. Poverty Bay 2, Hawkes Bay 0. The end of the fourth spell found Hawkes Bay attacking with undiminished vigour, and, soon after, Ormond scored for them. Poverty Bay kept matters lively for some time. Hawkes Bay attacked -strongly when the fifth spell Opened, but a splendid Poverty Bay rush took the ball dangerously near the Hawkes Bay gaol. Then R. Sherratt, following up a rush, scored. Poverty Bay 3. Hawkes Bay I.' The sixth spell Opened with a fast rush by Poverty ' Bay, followed by an equally fast one by Hawkes Bay. A fine bit of play by Murphy brought the ball in c)osp proximity to the Hawkes Bay goal, but, in a few minutes', it 'Was at the other end. 1b did not remain there long, for Murphy, following up cleverly, scored. Poverty 'Bay 4,' Hawkes Bay 1. , The final spell opened with a stiong attack by Poverty Bay. With two minutes to go play became very pxciting, and though Hawkes Bay on one or two occasions looked like scoring,, their opponents proved too strong, and the game ended— Poverty Bay 4, Hawkes Bay 1-To-morrow's - games ' are as follow : Wairarapa v.
