MAGISTRATE'S COURT

To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S*M. For drunkenness, John William Lucas and Henry Greenfield were each fined £1, with the alternative of three days' imprisonment. Lucas \Vas also made ' the subject of aj prohibition order. Six first-offenders were convicted. William Hickey, aged 68 years, an inmate of the Ohiro Home, was remanded till to-morrow, charged with a serious offence against a girl six years of age. William Brown (alias Anderson) and Mary Brown (alias Mary Jane Barry) were jointly charged with the theft of a watch, valued at £3 10s, the property of Thomas Power. Tho arcuseH, who pleaded guilt-y, had occupied a room in the same boardinghouse as the informant, and during his absence entered the room and stole the watch, which was subsequently traced to a second-hand dealer's 'shop. Both accused were sent to gaol for three months, and the Magistrate ordered that the watch be handed to its owner upon bis reimbursing the dealer in the sum of ss, which was advanced on the article. Colonel PI S. Heard, Director of Staff Duties and Military Training, returned to Wellington to-day sifter a visit to the South Island, in tho course of which he inspected the Garrison Artillery camp at Dunodiu and the military camp being conducted at Waitaki High School. The bowling match arranged between the building trade employers and the other members of the Wellington Employers' Association, arranged for tr>day, has been postponed until Friday afternoon.
