AUCKLAND'S LATE CORONER
ACCEPTS A CHEQUE UNDER PROTEST.
(BT TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, sth March. Acting upon the advice of Mr. Reed, K.C., Mr. Thomas Gresham, late City Coroner at Auckland, has accepted, under protest, a cheque for £200, this being the amount voted on the Estimates last year in consideration of past services. Mr. Gresham, in accepting the cheque, informs the Minister that he has seen a memo, sent by the Paymaster-General to the Chief Postmaster at Auckland requesting that officer to obtain from him (Mr. Gresham) an additional form of acquittance before completing payment. " In view of the assurance made by yourself," adds Mr. Gresham m his letter to tho> Minister, " to the A to L Committee on 18th September^ 1913, that the Government have decided to grant to Mr. Gresham an annual allowance in consideration of his past services, and in view also that Parliament, when the vote of £200 was submitted to them, were not made aware of the statement go made by you as to an annual allowance, I must respectfully pvotest against my being compelled to sign such a voucher and additional acquittance. I protested verbally at the time that I signed the said voucher and acquittance."
